Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis



A Fitting Tribute To A Comedy Legend: This Film Made Me Go Back And Rewatch The Lewis Classics
When I was growing up, I got to know Jerry Lewis through reruns of his classic movies and through the annual Muscular Dystrophy Labor Day telethon. His goofiness was amusing enough, but I don't think I ever fully understood his impact. I've respected some of his more serious work in later years (Scorsese's The King of Comedy, TV's Wiseguy), but honestly haven't given his legacy much thought. When I saw that Encore was premiering a documentary entitled "Method To The Madness Of Jerry Lewis," I thought it might be a bit of nostalgic fun. What I wasn't prepared for, however, was how much it would it would teach me about Lewis and his accomplishments. As a man and as an actor, Gregg Barson's engaging tribute really highlights what was (and is) special about everyone's favorite clown. Anyone with an interest in Lewis should thoroughly enjoy this retrospective.

The 2011 documentary METHOD TO THE MADNESS OF JERRY LEWIS caused me to look up just how long it's been since I saw a new movie Jerry Lewis directed or in which he acted. As I write this in 2013, it's been thirty years since Lewis was the director-star of the film CRACKING UP, his last feature unless you count small roles here and there.

Thirty years! Now, since then Jerry Lewis's charitable work and television appearances have kept him in the limelight and there probably isn't a minute per day where one of his films isn't playing somewhere on television. But viewing METHOD TO THE MADNESS OF JERRY LEWIS, you may realize that while it's not as though the public doesn't remember Lewis, some may have forgotten about his talent as a performer and filmmaker.

But don't take my word for it, especially with Steven Spielberg, Eddie Murphy, Carol Burnett, Carl Reiner, Chevy Chase, Jerry Seinfeld, and Quentin Tarantino among the Lewis fans who remind us of his...
