Pina

Why $ 37.98?
Finally an important show of Great Pina's work. But, why $ 37.98 for a zone 2 dvd - plus shipment charges? You could get it direct from the British Amazon site for 8.99 english sterling pounds - plus about $ 5,00 shipment, which altogether is about half the price what the other sellers for this item are requesting. So far, there is available even a 3D blu-ray - and a regular 2D blu ray - in blu-ray-zone 2. Why not for the USA - blu-ray zone 1? Ah!, the merchants ... When will this nonsense about dvd and blu-ray regions stop. Greed is godd and necessary, but excesive greed is bad and stupid for everybody.

For the love of modern ballet and Pina Bausch
"Pina" (106 min.) is a thrilling documentary about/celebration of choreographer Pina Bausch's work. It is important to note that Bausch herself was involved in the preparations of this movie, but she passed away just before shooting beagan after a short but devastating bout with cancer. Director Wim Wenders halted the production, but the dancers of the Wuppertal Tanztheatre convinced him to carry on and to make the movie as a tribute to Bausch. And that it certainly is.

The movie showcases 4 major pieces by Bausch, starting with The Rite of Spring, in which the dancers perform on a thick layer of dark sand. The other pieces are Cafe Mueller, Kontakthoff, and Vollmond. The latter is truly remarkable: there is a huge rock on the stage, and a continuous waterfall onto the stage, which eventually gets flooded for the most part. The dancers splish and splash their way to, through and onto it and it is an incredible visual experience. A number of scenes are also filmed in and...

Wenders is a talented director: Pina Bausch was a giant.
I've never been entirely convinced by Wim Wenders as a narrative film director-- his talents have always been more situated in the realm of conceptual art than that of the storyteller. Here he gets a chance to apply his conceptual art strengths to one of the few great artists of our time, Pina Bausch. The results are often startling, enthralling, and affirmative.

The opening excerpt from Bausch's RITE OF SPRING ranks as one of the greatest pieces of filmmaking I've ever seen. There is no doubt that Wenders has found the best possible use for 3D. To be frank, I would have preferred to see the entire performance rather than the documentary which enfolds it, but ideally we can have both (hint to distributors: there are at least five DVDs to be gleaned from the various dances here. I'd buy all of them!!)

The central section of the film includes excerpts from Bausch's more cerebral work, and it is here that perhaps the film is less effective. While the work...

The Paperboy

Outstanding film about the human condition
I came to this film not knowing what to expect. I hadn't seen "Precious" so I was unfamiliar with Lee Daniel's work. Plus, I had read some of the negative reviews about the film, so I came to the film with some trepdidation. But from the opening sequence in which Macy Gray barges in on Zac Efron to clean up his room, and the hilarious dialogue between these two actors, I was hooked. Nothing about what I had heard about the film had anything to do with the actual film. It was at times sad, funny, bizaare, chilling, grotesque, romantic, menacing, and at times all of the above. It was like nothing I have ever seen, except perhaps for the films of Tod Soldendz.

This film, like so many great films, doesn't have a genre, so if the fact that it doesn't fit into some preconceived notion of a specific type of film upsets you, you are not going to understand this film. It is mostly a character study of all the motives, predjudices, obsessions, and secrets that each character in the...

A Haunting Film ...
This motion picture is difficult to watch in places; but it is without doubt one of the best films I've seen this year. Nicole Kidman's performance deserves an Oscar. Ms Kidman is truly an actress who cannot be forced into cookie cutter roles. She has proven throughout her career that she can assume the character convincingly no matter how different that individual is from herself ... a rare and amazing gift.

Matthew McConaughey, Zac Efron, David Oyelowo, John Cusack & Macy Gray also give outstanding performances. I especially loved the character played by Macy Gray ... a truly loving and generous character in the midst of a world that did not value her as she deserved.

The Paperboy touches many dark places known to human beings. The film is set in a small Florida town in 1969 ... a place you might expect to find the racism and violence depicted in the film; but by the end of the film, you may view these expected vices tame compared to the other human conditions...

The Most Underrated Film of 2012
With The Paperboy, we have the arrival of a major new cinematic talent - Lee Daniels. Though his first two films (the bizarre Shadowboxer and the extremely well-acted Precious) had their merits, only with The Paperboy do we finally see the maturation of his craft, the arrival of a distinct new voice. It is a hypnotically bold, daringly original, and utterly fearless film that seemingly effortlessly dances between drama and comedy, tenderness and tension, completely unafraid to go to shocking, dangerous places. It feels totally unpredictable, and nothing about it feels safe, which is something far too many movies are these days. The Paperboy hearkens back to the audacious spirit of American cinema in the 1970s, when filmmakers weren't afraid to make outrageous works like Deliverance and Prime Cut. In this film's world, nothing is sacred, and because Daniels is so assured with this approach, so completely in control of every moment, watching it is an enthralling, absorbing, exhilarating...

Keep the Lights on

Sundance, berlin
I watched this film at Sundance and then again at Tribeca after it had won the Teddy Award at Berlin. I think the film is superbly done, and it approaches a relationship without judging its characters. It is also extremely well acted, and the lensing is fantastic, with a grainy beauty and a cinematography that reflects the 10 year journey the characters go through.

Great Film,
Highly Recommend it.

Superb acting, hopeful and heartbreaking, verismatic.
True love can be difficult to realize in the face of innumerable and unknown life impediments. These impediments, along with self-inflicted wounds from the emotional DNA we all carry (and which often expresses itself in relationship(s) with others), leaves these two people blissful, vulnerable and ignorant. Drug addiction or an addiction of any kind is anathema to any relationship(s). Often there is the enabler/co-dependent and the addicted one, who doesn't perceive the danger ahead. We get all of this in Keep the Lights On. It is a roller coaster of discovery for both of the individuals in the relationship, fascinating and heartbreaking to watch, but never vapid. Over a decade, the individuals in this story really do try to find a way to make their relationship work and it was refreshing to see the enormous, even herculean effort the two principals in this love drama expend in order to save each other and their relationship. The acting is superb and the attention to detail in the...

Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai [HD]

A Faithful Update Of A Slow Burn Morality Tale, Not A Typical Samurai Action Picture
We all have certain films that really resonate with us, that we remember distinctively and decisively for any number of reasons. For me, Masaki Kobayashi's 1962 classic "Harakiri" is one of those experiences. I didn't know anything about the movie before I sat down to watch it, and it absolutely blew me away. A quiet morality play that really challenges the notion of what honor means, "Harakiri" has a power, honesty, and emotional impact that is earned through a surprisingly understated narrative device. Instead of explosive dramatics, the screenplay takes its time in unraveling. And this focus on character development makes the ultimate confrontation both heartrending and harrowing! When I heard that prolific Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike was on board for a remake, I had feelings of both optimism and apprehension. I think the original holds up quite well and there is little to improve. But I've followed Miike for years and loved much of his work. Though, to be fair, I don't know...

super
The movie is not spectacular, but like "the twilight samurai", it moves at a slow pace presenting an intimate view of the life in the lower strata of the samurai caste.
Using an intense story for an exploration on the nature of that culture's concept of honor.

Prettier Than the Original But Is That a Plus?
Takashi Miichi's remake of the iconic 1962 "Hara Kiri," directed by Masaki Kobayashi, in color and 3-D for theater-goers, would surely be acclaimed as a near masterwork, a return to the cinematic artistry that made Kobayashi and Kurosawa sublime in their time. Unfortunately for Miichi, too many of us remember the original in all its black-and-white starkness and moodiness. Remaking Hara Kiri is as presumptuous as rewriting Hamlet or recomposing The Marriage of Figaro. The good news is that Miichi follows the script and the ineluctable timing of Kobayashi's classic almost scene for scene... until the climax, the furor that erupts in the last ten minutes. To compare the climactic scenes would constitute an atrocious spoilage, so I won't. But I will say that Miichi's finale discards the profound historical significance of Kobayashi's. Both films are quite worth seeing, believe me, even on successive evenings.

The most salient difference, nevertheless, needs to be expressed...

The Perks of Being a Wallflower [HD]

Adolescence Has Not Changed
I am 74 years old. The world is different now; there are more risks and more choices than when I was 15, but this movie reminded me of what it felt like to be 15 and 16 in 1954 and 1955. In those days homework was accompanied by radio with Rock and Roll music thanks to Alan Fried, Ranger hockey against Maurice Richard, and Gene Shepard, the best story teller of all time. Most of us had after school jobs which gave us enough spending money to begin making choices independent of our parents, and every day we left home and entered the world alone, with very little confidence but with the hope that everything was going to work out. Watching Charlie going through his day, observing the antics of his friends and trying to make sense of it all, brought tears to my eyes. The beauty of the movie is that it captures the universal experience of adolescence, and fortunately, as difficult as the experience may be, just like Charlie, most of us make it through.

"And in this moment I swear, we are infinite."
Every now and then, you come across a film where everything was done just right. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of those films. Directed by Stephen Chbosky, who wrote the screenplay as well as the popular young-adult novel of the same name from which it was adapted, The Perks of Being a Wallflower seems to hit every note just right, capturing all of the tumult and the extreme highs and lows of adolescence as experienced by a group of friends in high school in Pittsburgh back in the early 1990's.

(*** Note: this review contains what some people feel to be spoilers, so if you're sensitive to such things, please stop reading now and just take my word that this is really well-done, enjoyable film and is well worth going out of your way to find and see. ***)

The film begins with 14-year-old Charlie (Logan Lerman) writing a letter to an anonymous "Dear Friend" about his nervousness about starting his first year in high school. He writes because he doesn't feel...

An underrated movie worthy of awards.
When I think of this movie, I think about perfection. Everything about it is spot on. The acting, the directing, the music, the story, everything. Had their not been so much focus on Argo, Lincoln, Zero Dark, and Les Mis, this movie would have won many awards.

The story keeps you guessing and is anything but predictable. There are several things hidden from you as the plot unfolds and right away the mind gets busy trying to figure everything out.

You feel very involved when watching Charlie's freshman year in high school progress. You root for him and are riding on his emotions, but you are also trying to understand who exactly he is.

Without spoiling anything, the basis goes like this: Charlie's best friend shot himself the summer before Charlie goes to high school. As a result, he enters high school as a loner and outcast, and has to try to get through the year with as little resistance as he can. Luckily he starts to make friends and you are brought...

The Rite

Satanic Activity/Demonic Possession/Exorcism
I just saw this in the theater and it was excellent! Our story begins with a Catholic mortician (Rutger Hauer) and his young son, Michael (Colin O'Donoghue). Fast forward about 10 years, Michael is a man and leaves the Kovak & Son family business to study to become a priest. Four years later, Michael is graduating the seminary college but is very confused about his future. He has not taken his final vows when he is sent to Rome for two weeks training on The Rite of Exorcism. When he is encouraged to meet the less orthodox Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), he sets out on a path of understanding that far exceeds his expectation that demonic possession is just a psychological condition.

This slightly less than 2 hour film is well done, sufficiently scary, suspenseful, and reminds us that Satan is the master of illusion. It is also a film about the importance of having faith. Sir Anthony is outstanding in his role as a priest who has been performing exorcisms for some time...

Anthony Hopkins at his best
The Rite looked like it would be a mixed bag right from the start. The film seemed to suffer the same fate many other films before it fell victim to and that's giving away too much of the storyline in the trailers. On top of that, it was a film that revolved around exorcism which is a subject that usually leads to disappointing results. Expectations would lead one to believe that The Rite would have enough momentum to reel you in only to drop the ball during its finale similar to last year's The Last Exorcism (except hopefully without the appearance of a neon red, glow in the dark fetus). Luckily, the film has a few surprises up its sleeve.

The cinematography in the film is probably the first thing you'll notice visually. The opening of the film makes things like dripping embalming fluid, a swing set on a playground, and an overturned shopping cart seem more interesting than they really are. Rain is an element used fairly often in the film to usually signify when something...

Hypnotically fascinating...intense thriller with strong performance from Anthony Hopkins...
THE RITE may well have produced some mixed reviews, but I have to admit that having just seen it at my local multiplex theater, I found it a gripping enough experience although I was not particularly fond of the limp ending. The script should have provided a more satisfying conclusion.

ANTHONY HOPKINS, manages to create a full-bodied character from some very thin material. Matching him every step of the way as a young priest who is beginning to have too many doubts about his faith is COLIN DONOGHUE. He holds his own in every scene with Hopkins, who gives his creepiest performance since "Silence of the Lambs."

A major asset is the film's cinematography, especially for the scenes in and around Rome, and whether photographed in rain or shine. The film, in fact, owes a lot of its spellbinding power to the fantastic camerawork and the delicately haunting background score with its occasional uses of strong chords for shock value.

But it's Hopkins who anchors...

The Awakening (2012) [HD]

HORROR/THRILLER SLEEPER
Rebecca Hall stars as Florence Cathcart an educated woman who debunks spiritualists. The movie opens with a seance in 1921 London. Our heroine springs into action.

She is then requested to come to an orphanage where a ghost of a boy has been spotted and photographed. She dismisses the ghostly images, and accepts the task.
Florence is an independent and educated woman, who smokes. She reminded me of Anne Hathaway in this role. As her investigation proceeds, Florence begins to doubt her skepticism/atheism.

Interesting film with a twist that has clues. Good use of sound. Enjoyable. 4 1/2 stars.

PARENTAL GUIDE: Sex and nudity (male and female)

Well done
This is a very well done ghost story set in early 1920's Great Britain. It is shortly after the first World War and terrible influenza epidemic and "a time for ghosts". Florence Cathcart is a nonbeliever who investigates claims of the supernatural and has never found evidence to support any kind of haunting. Then she is asked to investigate a boys' boarding school where the ghost of a boy is haunting the halls and has led to the death of one of the pupils. Florence is a strong minded, modern woman who goes about her task a bit like Sherlock Holmes does when solving his cases. Everything, in her mind, has a scientific explanation. She sets up tests to record temperature, measure magnetic fields, and even track footprints. As her investigation proceeds, what started out as just another false claim begins to get more complicated. The story is interesting and the actors are perfect in their roles. It's a bit predictable at times but never boring. This is a film that I would...

"TRULY TERRIFYING!"
This creepy gothic thriller/horror is set in old England, 1921. This production is your typical British Haunted House Movie, starring Rebecca Hall who plays Florence Cathcart. Florence is hired to investigate a haunted boarding school, who has her doubts at first that ghosts are haunting the school. However, as the investigation continues, so do the eerie occurences around the school. The ghost hunter then becomes convinced that spirits of the dead are angry as the terror begins. Acting Performance of Rebecca Hall is perfect for this chilling movie, along with England as the spooky setting. Delightful for horror and thriller lovers on a dark, summer evening!

Detropia [HD]

Fascinating... but also misleading.
I was born in Detroit, and spent the first 33 years of my life living there, and even after moving out, I'm still just two miles away. I spent most of my adult life working there. I just watched Detropia, and my first reaction was that visually it gives an excellent picture of what much of Detroit has become. Where is falls short is in the history- it's as if the past 40 years of political mismanagement and outright theft never took place. The filmmakers present a narrative in which big companies outsourced all the jobs, and the rich got together and decided to destroy the middle class and oppress the poor. But that's nonsense. Detroit's problems aren't easily explained in terms of bankrupt Marxist ideology.

We had several mayors who chased working people out of the city and plundered the public treasury. But we also had one- Dennis Archer- who had the city on a path to renewal before he was replaced by his criminally corrupt successor. Detroit's property taxes are the...

A Striking Documentary Contrasts A Great City Of Yore With The Decaying Metropolis of Today
The new documentary "Detropia" by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady (Jesus Camp) is, at once, an homage to a great city and its eulogy. In 1930, Detroit was considered the fastest growing city in the world. Today, it is shrinking at an alarming rate having lost a quarter of its population in the last decade alone. In this striking film, a diverse cross section of Detroit citizens muse about days gone by as they struggle with the economic reality of their city in crisis. Shot in almost a post-apocalyptic splendor, "Detropia" has an almost haunting quality that is hard to describe. Its cameras take in the landscape of an abandoned metropolis and fill this canvas with snippets of real life stories. In many ways, these are tales of survival complete with happy memories and a nostalgia for the way things were. While it doesn't offer many solutions to the current conditions (nor could it really), it paints a pretty vivid picture of the unpleasantness associated with contemporary economic...

Disturbing yet intriguing
I was born in Detroit, and lived in the area until 10 years when both my husband and my companies closed and we had to move out of state. I was so sad to watch this film. Detroit has a great history and I am old enough to remember when it was strong and vibrant and also have seen its fall. Its current state is the result of years of mismanagement, racism and nearsightedness that drove out the middle class and left its current shell. What the film maker shows is real, but what she doesn't show is why it is so. The collapse of the auto industry definitely had an impact but frankly even if that didn't happen Detroit would be in the same position. This movie is bleak but I think it missed its mark. Detroit is not an innocent victim. It has allowed itself to be the victim and has done nothing to help itself for over 40 years. That does not come through in the film.

Searching for Sugar Man

It can happen to you if you're young at heart
The most striking thing of the many striking things in Searching for Sugar Man is the personality of Rodriguez himself. Unspoiled, not bitter, undimmed perceptions, and the continued passion for his craft all make a huge imprint on the viewer. And of course, it is all the more impressive because he spent 30 years in demolition and cleanup instead of filling our minds and souls with his remarkable music. The story is too crazy to be made up; no one would see it if it were a piece of fiction, unless it was written by Kurt Vonnegut or Douglas Adams. But it is a true story, a gripping story, and a rewarding story. The story of a wonderful human being and a remarkable father. A feel good documentary which alone makes it a near impossibility. There is only one qualifier you will notice again and again in reference to Searching for Sugar Man: must see.

Stranger than fiction: a MUST-SEE documentary
"Searching for Sugar Man" (2012 release; 85 min.) brings the unlikely but true story of how, Rodriguez, an obscure American musician who released 2 never-heard albums in the early 1970s became a music sensation in South Africa. As a music nerd, this became even more compelling as I will admit I had never heard of Rodriguez before.

The first half of the movie centers around the efforts of two South African men in the music business, both fan of and curious about the mysterious Rodriguez to simply find out more about this guy. The movie then traces the beginnings of Rodriguez in the late 60s in Detroit (with archive footage of the city at that time, not much better than it is now, just haunting) and how Rodriguez's 1970 debut album "Cold Fact" first became an underground hit in South Africa at the height of the apartheid regime (with songs like "The Establishment Blues") and eventually became a genuine hit album. It is about midway through the movie that we are introduced to...

Amazing Story
As a South African raised, with almost all my friends, on the music of Rodriguez it is almost impossible to believe that such a talent remained unrecognised in his home country.
This film goes some way to explaining it, but only some way. See it and buy "Cold Fact"; better late than never.

As Goes Janesville

Great inside look into politics
Helped explain a lot of things. Exceptionally well done documentary. Well edited also. Worth watching if you are interested in politics or sociology.

Absolutely Interesting! Must See.
As goes Janesville is an exceptionally good film. The film makers paint a portrait of the painful predicament facing about 90% of America today: is the American Dream gone? Is it deferred? The film hints at some of the root causes but doesn't hit you over the head. The working class women at the center of the story are incredible humans, as so many women trying to make ends meet are. I highly recommend this film.

OK
It was a documentary of the war in Wisconsin. I was very much part of this war and found it OK from a different view point.

Amy Schumer: Mostly Sex Stuff

She's a comedian, not a politician
The only other review on here is stupid. Why would anyone buy a comic's movie without some idea of what they talk about? Go on YouTube, do some research. Her title is "Mostly Sex Stuff". Why are you expecting Hillary Clinton or Katie Couric jokes? Does anyone find a woman talking "ladylike" to EVER be funny?

This special is fantastic. If you like Sarah Silverman or Bonnie MacFarlane (sp?), then you will love her. Definitely check this out if you like any of her YouTube 1 minute clips.

Amazing
Amy Schumer is awesome. Great story teller, very witty, very funny and .... as the title suggests, her comedy is about "Mostly Sex Stuff". So if you are easily offended take note of the title of this video and move on.

Amy's raunchy comedy had me in stitches
If you mixed Whitney Cummings with Robert Schimmel, and then made the mix a LOT cuter and a bunch funnier, you'd end up with something almost as good as Amy Schumer. Amy is cute as a button and her comedy is as filthy as doing it in a nightclub's public bathroom. The combination is funny in itself. The jokes are funnier. I hope to see a lot more of Schumer's act in the future.

The Man With The Iron Fists [HD]

Fun, Tarantino-esque movie, but overextends itself
The Man With the Iron Fists is a movie that was 'presented' (not produced) by Quentin Tarantino and directed by RZA. It centers on the story of a black blacksmith in China, who is trying to leave his hostile home village that's entrenched in between good ol' clan wars.

If you are seeking to be entertained, look no further. RZA blends the 'hip-hop samurai' type of music and feel -- prevalent in a lot of anime in recent years -- with the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon-floating-around-style of fighting to create a high-flying (no pun intended) and adventurous parody of the genres with a Spaguetti Western flare. Needless to say, visually this movie is great in many respects.

However, beyond that, the movie suffers from more than a few noticeable stumbling points. The first being dialogue. Not only is the writing over-simplified, but the fact that some of the Chinese characters have Oriental-English accents while others speak perfectly clear English is something that...

if you love 70's kung fu movies...
fantastic movie! i saw a lot of very unique and fun kung fu ideas that could only come from a true movie fan such as the rza! there is a brass statue of a man that is in many movies as a training dummy for qi (chi) blocking attacks. in this movie there is the statue and a man with skin that can become brass at will, it links up toward the end in such a cool way i was blown away. i imagine the rza back in the 70's thinking "what if someone had to fight the qi training statue? then they would be really f*&%ed!"

i could see where he deliberately paid homage to old kung fu films with some of the camera work, hair and acting styles, this kind of thing might look odd too someone who hasn't seen older kung fu movies as some of it seems corny or stilted (which is how those old movies are, something fans love!). but even so, they would get over it every time one of the AMAZING battles started.

at first the rap music came off as out of place. this is coming from a wu tang...

good kung-fu movie reminded me of the old ones
good movie for a martial arts film. would have like to seen more fighting styles and the other clans in this movie.

Seven Psychopaths [HD]

Living and dying for the sake of Shih Tsu
Martin McDonagh, among the best known Irish directors previously won an Oscar for the short movie Six shooter A Collection of 2005 Academy Award Nominated Short Films although he is perhaps best known for the acclaimed In Brugesalso starring Colin Farrell, a dark comedy with tragic overtones about two hitmen on the run.

I first heard of this movie last year when I saw the movie The Guard directed by his brother Michael John. A trademark of the McDonaghs is dark humor mixed with some irony and perhaps even some philosophy together with some absurdity. As I loved The Guard so much and it has the biggest domestic box office of any Irish movie ever made, I looked forward to this latest movie with more than a little anticipation.

If you're like me and like American directors who also write such as Tarantino with Reservoir Dogs...

If you liked "In Bruges", you'll love this one
Some 3-4 years ago, director Martin McDonagh teamed up with Colin Farrell in an absurd but very funny crime comedy called "In Bruges". I loved that movie (and not just because it was filmed in the Belgian city of Bruges, where I spent my high school years). Now comes another crime comedy from the same team.

"Seven Psychopaths" (2012 release; 110 min.) brings the story of Marty (played by Farrell), a struggling writer who is working on a movie script called "Seven Psychopaths". His buddy Billy (played by Sam Rockwell) is volunteering to help in any way possible. At some point Billy steals a little dog, and only later do we learn that the dog's owner is Charlie (played by Woody Harrelson), a dangerous gangster who is out for revenge. Last, but certainly not least, there is Hans (played by Christopher Walken), a buddy of Billy's. There are a bunch of smaller characters in the movie. To be honest, I had a hard time keeping track of the multitude of characters, and the fact that...

Original, hilarious, and a must-see
Being a big fan of "In Bruges," getting excited for writer, director, and now producer Martin McDonagh's latest film "Seven Psychopaths" was like second nature. "In Bruges" is begging for a revisit, but it added a lot of humor to hitmen and crime situations that usually try to be gritty or as serious as humanly possible in films before it. "In Bruges" had this uniqueness to it and "Seven Psychopaths" is even more creative and hilarious in comparison.

A struggling screenwriter named Marty (Colin Farrell) has an idea for his next screenplay; a movie entitled "Seven Psychopaths." The problem is Marty is having difficulty coming up with the actual story or the psychopaths for that matter and his alcoholism often gets the better of him. His strange best friend Billy (Sam Rockwell), who kidnaps dogs with a religious man named Hans (Christopher Walken) and returns them to get the reward, has extreme interest in helping Marty write his story. What Marty doesn't count on is Billy...

Love Section, The

The Love Section
Great characters, simple fun. Well written, well shot. The characters were real, wonderfully developed ( especially the main characters) and great dialogue. I really enjoyed this film and identified with the characters. New up and coming actor Davetta Sherwood was great. Well done.

Very Good and Relateable
This movie was very good. (4 Stars). It dealt with some adult contemporary relationship aspects such age differences in relationships, treatment of the love interest's family (noteably her son and mother) as well the mother's baby father when he came to visit, and the test that the relationship undergoes toward the end when things seem to be going well. The male lead character was a cool-headed likeable 32yr old melancholy player/white collar working class dude that was at the end of sowing his oats when meeting Ms 20 yr laid back old soul diva. This guy was a cool smooth cat although he has a bit of dog in him running around. While there were some messy things he did I still like how he handled defusing what could have been a very ugly situation with his love interest's baby father. He handled it like a real man - real talk. Davetta Sherwood (aka Davetta Stone) is very pretty!! She hails from $$ Earning Mt Vernon so yes..she knows her old school hip hop mc's like the late great Heavy...

Typical
This movie is wack and starts off very weak and confusing. Maybe it works for someone else but not me though.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 (plus bonus features) (Animated Feature)

Superb work by Oliva and company
Olivia has crafted a masterpiece with the second half of this epic. While never forgetting that he was in service to the story, Oliva clarified muddy plot points and streamlined Miller's work while remaining true to the sequence of the story STEP FOR STEP. The voice acting was superb, with Weller's weary, resonant baritone serving well in the place of iconic Kevin Conroy.

This two-part feature has become my benchmark for animated interpretation of graphic novels, and has my highest recommendation.

Excellence, Cinematic
Part 2 steps it up, From brutal rendetions Batman's crushing punches, Jokers an omnisexual, truly homicidal killing nightmare to Superman's immense power yet patriotic imbecilic servitude this is the finest adult animation DC has ever produced . Be warned this is violent and bloody with the Joker scenes being painted red with chilling death scenes. The Superman Batman throw down is truly epic and cinematic with a movie quality score. Peter Weller does a fantastic job capturing the hyper intelligent, brooding, serious and pragmatic older man Batman who's burning rage cannot be quenched from his traumatic childhood scarrring.

Superb
I really enjoyed part 2. I couldn't wait to check it out when I saw the initial trailer for it. Hopefully others will enjoy this as much as I did. This will definitely have you wanting more. I will pick up the best buy release when it hit the stores for the joker figurine that comes with it. Very dark, the way batman should be seen. Loved it.

Dumb movie
This is one of the most ridiculously stupid movies I have ever seen. Unfortunately, my 3 year old son absolutely loves it, and so I am forced to watch it on a very regular basis.

Really, this thing is the price of a studio movie??
Cute concept, but completely cheesy and not in a good way. Ridiculously overpriced, I can buy my kid a Disney movie for the same amount (or less) and have less annoying characters and better dialogue. The characters are whiny, and my kid was bored.

Exciting Boy Entertainment!
This movie is fun and action packed for about the 5 yr old set. Nice message about how to get along. It's got a good message

Milarepa [HD]

Excellent beyond measure
Let me start with what others have said with regards to the film's one drawback... it is part one of two. As enthralling and far better than expected as this film is, it disappointingly terminates midway through the story. The end of this movie is a logical breaking point, however, a breaking point all the same, leaving you wanting more.

That said, there is no reason to give this DVD anything less than 5 stars, because it could not be better than it is. Interestingly, most of the cast and crew are from a Buddhist monastery. You would never know until you read the credits at the end because there is nothing provincial or pedestrian about it. The acting, dialogue, special effects... everything for that matter, comes across as a very professional production.

There is considerable Buddhist "morality" conveyed as well, which is perfectly handled by the monks who made this film, but not in a heavy-handed way. In fact, one would need a Buddhist background to recognize...

Fascinating story of intrigue, betrayal, and revenge begins the life of famous Tibetan saint Milarepa
Filmed in the Spiti Valley on the Indian-Tibetan border, this award winning film tells the story of the first half of Milarepa's life (1052-1135), whose path to enlightenment began with revenge. A second movie is planned to complete the story.

When his well-to-do merchant father died, Milarepa's uncle and aunt took all the family's wealth, suddenly thrusting Milarepa and his mother into poverty. His mother plots revenge by sending Milarepa away to study sorcery. Milarepa comes back to the village and causes a violent lightning storm to kill many people.

When the villagers chase him, Milarepa causes large rocks to fall from a ridge blocking their way. As he escapes Milarepa meets an old monk, and learns of Buddha's teachings. Milarepa returns to his sorcery teacher, who advises him to study with Marpa. The film ends with Milarepa seeking Marpa.

The landscape is stark and beautiful. The special effects are quite well done - I especially liked the scene...

part 2?
great film. however, where is the part 2 of this movie? i thought it was released 2009 but still nothing!

The Cold Light Of Day [HD]

Not As Bad As These Reviewers Tell You ...!
OK, having seen this movie I know first hand that this movie is not as bad as it is made out to be by ALL the reviewers here on Amazon. I won't go over the plot and the actors, as they have been dug deeply into in the previous reviews. Instead, I shall tell you it like it truly is.

The movie, 'Cold Light Of Day' is a good, decent action movie. You get pulled in and it never lets you go. Why? Well, you just don't know who to trust and what is around any given corner. Sure Henry C. is made out to be a "super spy" instead of the stockbroker he seemingly is, but that's OK, as it truly doesn't deter you from watching the movie. My guess is this movie was made a couple of years ago before his upcoming blockbuster 'Superman - Man Of Steel' comes to our screens. Sometimes these kind of direct-to-DVD movies sit on shelves for ages until one of the leads becomes famous. (Take, for instance, 'Cabin In The Woods' with Chris Hemsworth, filmed in 2009 and released this year due to...

(2.5 STARS) "Frantic in Madrid": OK Thriller from the Director of "JCVD"
Henry Cavill (Theseus of Tarsem Singh-directed epic "Immortals") plays a young American businessman Will, who has just arrived in Spain to meet his family. While out on a yacht with his father Martin (Bruce Willis), mother Laurie (Caroline Goodall), young brother Josh (Rafi Gavron) and Josh's fiancée Dara (Emma Hamilton), Will makes a mistake and one of them gets injured. To buy a medicine, Will goes on shore alone, but when Will comes back, he finds everyone on the boat has disappeared.

"The Cold Light of Day" starts promisingly, and then it slowly loses momentum through a whole heap of cliché. Without revealing too much about the story, the US-Spanish thriller is about an American on foreign soil, who gets involved in a web of intrigue.

The film's basic idea (a bit sounds like "Frantic") is not bad. The problem is its poor execution. In short, the film has no style. Characters, storytelling, acting and action set-pieces - everything in the film is...

Wonderful!
I saw this movie at the theater and was waiting on it to come out on DVD. Love the action and actors.

I Survived BTK

A Survivor Seeks to Overcome the Tragic Event that's Defined Him
On January 15th, 1974 the town of Wichita, KS was turned upside down when four members of the Otero family were found brutally slain inside their humble home. This murder would be the first committed by Dennis Radar, whose twisted fantasies would claim six more victims over a span of seventeen years. The town of Wichita would come to remember the killer's sadistic calling card inscribed B.T.K. (for Bind, Torture, Kill), but what about the victims?

This film follows one of the survivors from that first crime, Charlie Otero, to see how his life was affected by that fateful day. We see how he relives that horrible moment, how he seeks to step out from the shadow cast by the monster, and other unfortunate events that plague his life.

It's refreshing to see one man's quest to overcome the event that's defined his life. We spend a lot of time with Charlie as he talks about his theories behind the case, his life after the event, how he gets by day to day, and how he...

What is the Effect of Murder?
Gritty, personal storytelling reveals the true cost of murder to individuals and families who survive. The film did not dwell on the horrific crimes, but rather the intimate stories of those left behind by the tragedies. A thought-provoking and unflinching portrayal which sidesteps the overhyped drama ubiquitous in the true crime genre.

chilling
No words to describe the horror. I am with the subject on this, there has to be more to the case than just one man. Especially at the start of the killings.

The Runway

A Delightful Little Film About Needs and Relationships
Amazon Instant Video is now making available for viewers this excellent little film made in 2010 but not released until the end of 2011 in Mexico. It seems to be a winner and deserves theatrical release.

The plot is best described by the package insert: 'The Runway is inspired by the true story of a South American pilot Ernesto (Demián Bichir) who landed his plane near Mallow, in 1983. Against all odds, the people of the town came together to build a runway to get him home and briefly caught the imagination of the nation. It is the story of Paco (Jamie Kierans), a young boy without a father who adopts the pilot and convinces the town to build a runway to get him home.' It was written and directed by Ian Power and seems to let us see the story as through a child's eyes. There is small town camaraderie, some love interest, and a lot of the joy of being able to try to make the world (or at least a corner of it) a better place. Bruno Bechir (Demián's brother),...

Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis

A Fitting Tribute To A Comedy Legend: This Film Made Me Go Back And Rewatch The Lewis Classics
When I was growing up, I got to know Jerry Lewis through reruns of his classic movies and through the annual Muscular Dystrophy Labor Day telethon. His goofiness was amusing enough, but I don't think I ever fully understood his impact. I've respected some of his more serious work in later years (Scorsese's The King of Comedy, TV's Wiseguy), but honestly haven't given his legacy much thought. When I saw that Encore was premiering a documentary entitled "Method To The Madness Of Jerry Lewis," I thought it might be a bit of nostalgic fun. What I wasn't prepared for, however, was how much it would it would teach me about Lewis and his accomplishments. As a man and as an actor, Gregg Barson's engaging tribute really highlights what was (and is) special about everyone's favorite clown. Anyone with an interest in Lewis should thoroughly enjoy this retrospective.

The film does a good job presenting a well rounded portrait of the entertainer. We get to learn about his history...

Don't forget me
The 2011 documentary METHOD TO THE MADNESS OF JERRY LEWIS caused me to look up just how long it's been since I saw a new movie Jerry Lewis directed or in which he acted. As I write this in 2013, it's been thirty years since Lewis was the director-star of the film CRACKING UP, his last feature unless you count small roles here and there.

Thirty years! Now, since then Jerry Lewis's charitable work and television appearances have kept him in the limelight and there probably isn't a minute per day where one of his films isn't playing somewhere on television. But viewing METHOD TO THE MADNESS OF JERRY LEWIS, you may realize that while it's not as though the public doesn't remember Lewis, some may have forgotten about his talent as a performer and filmmaker.

But don't take my word for it, especially with Steven Spielberg, Eddie Murphy, Carol Burnett, Carl Reiner, Chevy Chase, Jerry Seinfeld, and Quentin Tarantino among the Lewis fans who remind us of his...

Amazing ! Amazing! Amazing! If you are Jerry Lewis fan,or just need to understand what this legend represents to the film industry...buy this DVD.Such special footage and wonderful memories are captured in this two hour documentary! This is a DVD I will cherish forever ....

Abel's Field

A different Christian film.
When I asked my gang what they thought of this new film starring Kevin Sorbo and Samuel Davis, they unanimously said, "It was different from other Christian films." And they mean that's a good thing. Abel's Field was well written, well acted and entertaining to boot.

Among many good messages in this story, I was particularly touched by Seth's dedication to his younger sisters. My kids also pointed this out as one of the things that made Abel's Field stand out. So often, even in Christian media, brothers and sisters are portrayed as annoyances to each other. It was a nice change to see an example of what siblings should be to each other.

Allen liked that Abel, the Christian lead in the film, was not a perfect saint. He was portrayed in a very real way that all of us can relate to. Just like the average Christian, Abel was struggling to overcome his past and gain victory over the sin in his life while trying to live out God's will, share the Gospel and be a...

These films are getting better...
I purchased this DVD simply out of a sense of obligation. If the Body of Christ fails to support faith-based films, every time we go to the megaplex it will be nothing but Naked Girls Part 2 and Blowing Things Up Part 3.

Using my incredible powers of deductive reasoning which are never wrong, I examined the cover and classified this movie as a rehashing of one of those Yoda and Luke Skywalker films. The angry kid learns important life lessons from a wise groundskeeper or trash collector or whatever.

Boy, was I wrong.

This time, Luke's anger management issues pale in comparison to the baggage Yoda is carrying. The story is complimented almost perfectly by the location. The small Texas town setting gives the film a "Friday Night Lights" kind of feel.

I won't name names, but I have sat through some truly awful faith-based movies. But "Abel's Field" is one of the best I have seen.

DVD Review Abel's Field

Left motherless by tragedy and abandoned by his father, high school senior Seth McArdle (Samuel Davis) faces enormous pressure as he strives to support his younger twin sisters. At school, he endures the daily bullying from members of the football team. At work, he struggles to earn enough money to make ends meet. At home, he has no one to turn to.
When Seth fights back, he's singled out for punishment and assigned to an after-school work detail under the supervision of the reserved groundskeeper, Abel (Soul Surfer's Kevin Sorbo). Seth is surprised to discover that Abel understands his struggles ... and his dreams. Abel encourages Seth to ask out popular Katie and even steps in to babysit so Seth can go out on the date. Yet as dark circumstances lure Seth toward a desperate decision, a reluctant Abel could be the one person who points him back toward the light.

Ayahuasca: Vine of the Soul

Expected less than I got
This was a great film. I expected more of what I'd already seen in other documentary's about Aya, but this one was different in that it focused mostly on personal stories. It was well shot, the stories were interesting, and it was very moving in parts. Highly recommended.

An understanding of sacred indigenous medicine for Westerners
If you have curiosity about Ayahuasca and indigenous wisdom, this film is a must see. Beautiful depiction of ceremony, community, and how plant medicine can help heal all of us and the planet.

Good Medicine for Canadians
This is a balanced introduction to the Peruvian Ayahuasca tradition. You get to see the people evolve as a result of their experiences. The variety of responses, the interdependent friendships which are created, and the magic of the interventions are accurate depictions of the ceremonies and groups of people at these ceremonies, based on my participation in ayahuasca ceremonies. At the Psychedelic Science 2013 doctors and researchers from Peru, Brazil, and Spain shared their evidence that ayahuasca is effective in calming depression and has a beneficial effect in terms of spiritual growth, sense of well being, self-knowledge, and reducing addictive behavior and drug seeking. These findings are implied in the film, but could not be demonstrated. Gabor Mate's comments are accurate. He presented at the MAPS conference and took the film a step further. I recommend the film as an introduction.

Ben Lee: Catch My Disease

An Intimate Rock Documentary About The Nature Of Celebrity
It's been a few years since I've thought about Australian musician Ben Lee and, I must admit, I was rather surprised that he was the subject of the new documentary feature "Ben Lee: Catch My Disease." While I think that the movie caters primarily to those familiar with its subject, it also serves to effectively demonstrate the cycle of celebrity with Lee as its example. Even if Ben Lee isn't a common name around your household, the film still provides useful insight into the nature of stardom and the phases of popularity inherent in the entertainment world today. And it's packed with testimonials from other faces that you certainly will recognize! Lee seriously dated Claire Danes, married Ione Skye, and befriended others such as Michelle Williams, Winona Ryder, Jason Schwartzman, Zooey Deschanel, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, and the Beastie Boys' Mike D. All weigh in on Lee in this rather informal, but intimate, portrait of the man who has traveled through the music industry and...

Great music celeb profile. And great music
Ben is a really nice guy, you can tell that from this film which follows him over a number of years through the good and the bad. Very interesting look at celebrity in today's society. In the end, Ben finds a certain calm amidst all of the pressures of the music industry. Very intimate interviews with friends and past lover - Danes, gives strong insight into Ben and that time period in all of their lives.

Well Presented And Affecting Film.
Essentially a series of interjoining episodes such as may be found in a collection of short fiction wherein are portrayed common characters, this film has nary an uninteresting moment as it chronicles the attempts from a saxophone playing head of a jazz quintet, Jack Solow (Peter MacNicol) to locate steady employment for his musicians, not an easy task within a highly competitive entertainment environment. The veteran cinematographer and film school mentor Ralph Toporoff directs this work, reflecting in its close attention to detail his knowledge of the scenario's subject and, when scenes are basically melodrama, Toporoff along with members of his cast and crew successfully address them in a naturalistic fashion. Intriguing personal elements are introduced into the episodic script that stand very well on their own, aided by sensitive playing from the well-selected cast, smoothly implemented camera setups, and clever utilization of sparse resources, as evidenced in footage concerning...

Fishermen...
To be a fisherman means you need to love to be on water not land, a mechanic so you can fix your boat when it breaks down in the middle of the ocean, have navigation sense, understand tides and work some 20 hours a day at a time. This is not a business that you get to learn in any college, you learn by tradition. Most documentaries hype up the story with loud music that you can hardly get to hear the narrator. This documentary is different. There is no narration, fishermen talk, fish wholesalers talk and their families talk. You do not get statistics; you get facts, real facts, what it means to have oil in an environment where oil has no business. This documentary is about the impact of oil spills on marine life and the fisherman families' livelihood for generations to come.

Average life span of Exxon Valdez worker was 51 year old. Infact, everyone who worked on the cleanup of Exxon Valdez is dead. OSHA does not recognize colds or flues which are the hazards of oil spill...

Understanding the disinformatiom
This DVD for me is full of information about the cleanup operation and the impact that the oil spill had on all those who were involved , but more importantly it is a documentary about the manipulation of how the public are presented with information by corperate America to control their comprehension of what is happening . To learn how you are being presented with controled story by both the Government and corperations , to make you feel all is well .
To see how these people lie and control with image control is asstounding .

It's in the Bag

And on top there should be a cherry.............maraschino
Addendum 6/8/13: This new Blu-Ray reissue IS the preferred non-voiceover version, read on.

Where to start? First, there are two versions of this hysterical farce but one of the versions is severely hampered by Fred Allen's voice overs through many of the best comedy segments. The other, and I'm guessing, "original" version involves no voice overs and this version is an unmitigated classic for which we can give a big thank you to producer Jack Skirball.

It's in the Bag is one of the screwiest comedies ever. It's the story of Fred F. Floogle(Fred Allen)an unsuccessful flea circus exhibitor and his madcap family; devoted and wholly unsatisfied wife Eve(Binnie Barnes), soon-to-be-bride daughter Marion(Gloria Pope) and genius son Homer(Richard Tyler)who is given many of the best lines though there are zillions of funny lines and millions of gags in this one-of-a-kind romp. Exterminator(Robert Benchley)is determined to not let his son Perry Parker(William Terry) marry...

One of Radio's better Movies
There have been numerous attempts at fashioning movie vehicles for radio stars:most of them failed to work,or work consistently well, but It's In The Bag is something of an exception.Starring Fred Allen-who had a great face for radio-and featuring cameos from Jack Benny,Robert Benchley,Don Ameche,Rudy Valee, and William Bendix, this is a simple,plot-driven movie packed full with in-jokes and tried-and-tested routines.Mel Brooks would return to the source material - a Russian short story - for the 1970 movie The Twelve Chairs, but the pretentiousness of that version is missing here.If you like Benny(who is on fine form) and Allen(who is at his most appealing,or least unappealing, depending on your perspective)then It's In The Bag is well worth a look.

It's in FRED's Bags!
It's a shame that only a chosen few REALLY KNOW who Fred Allen is. In the 1940's his popularity was that of names we still cite today - Jack Benny, Abbott & Costello, etc.

But in his day Fred's radio program was incredibly popular, as well as his "fued" with Jack Benny. If you love old radio, or old time comedy you will enjoy IT'S IN THE BAG. Fred Allen was, as still is, one of the smartest writers of comedy there was - even today great legends such as Mel Brooks and George Carlin cite his influence.

One drawback with the film is that to get all the jokes you will need to be familiar with "the age" when the film was released since some of Fred's jokes are dated (commentary about crowded theaters comes to mind), but some of the jokes are just as fresh today as they were 56 years ago (commentary on how relatives get in the picture, why do we need to watch credits, psychoanalists, etc.)

In some ways it's a very "da-da-ist" film -as in the vein of...

Celeste And Jesse Forever

another great indie 'romcom'
"Celeste and Jesse Forever" (2012 release; 92 min.) brings the story of Celeste (played by Rashida Jones, who also co-wrote the script) and Jesse (played by Andy Semberg), who have been "best friends forever" since their youth, got married 6 years ago, and now are separating but still remain friends. One day Jesse runs into Veronica, a Belgian girl (played by Rebecca Dayan), and starts dating her, even though he remains tormented by the loss of Celeste. In the rest of the movie we watch and wonder whether Celeste and Jesse ultimately will reconcile.

First off, you need to take a leap of faith that, despite still being BFFs, Celeste and Jesse are in the process of divorcing. It's never explained why that is happening, other than a general "taking each other for granted" type explanation (which does not square with the two spending all their time together). But once you can get over that, the movie works like a charm. Jones just oozes charisma, and with her recent roles in...

This is a comedy and drama, very much like 1989's 'When Harry Met Sally.' Most important, it portrays the ups-and-downs of relationships in today's world, on TV shows and in the Real World. The question millions of people have asked themselves after a loving relationship ends, can we still be friends? Celeste and Jesse met in high school, married young, and after reaching age thirty, began to grow apart. Celeste became successful in her career and Jesse is content at being unemployed. They clash in opinions and arguments until Celeste asks for a divorce. Jesse accepts the transition, still in love with Celeste. As they are apart, Celeste had second thoughts, and they both realized that in order to truly love someone, you may have to let them go. There are mixed-emotions, humor, and heartfelt moments. Acting Performance Very Good. Enjoyable and Highly Recommended!

Solid movie.
I did not expect this movie to be as good as it was when I decided to purchase it. This is one of those movies that, when you reflect back on the situations the main characters find themselves in, you really appreciate the movie and may end up watching it a second or third time through. The acting was solid, especially when it needed to be (like when she finds out the big news), and most of the time when I asked myself: "How would I react to that?", their reactions were largely similar to what mine would have been.

My favorite part is the "climax" when the two main characters finally confront their emotions outside of the bar and they do it angrily and storm off. You can really feel Rashida Jones' heart breaking in that sequence of scenes as she is at her wit's end and has nothing left to lose so she goes for broke and comes up short.

This ending was the type of ending I LOVE because you will like it, or dislike it, based on who you are as a...

Bangkok Assassins

Very Weak Martial Arts
Good story and good looking cast but the fighting is mostly sorcerer tricks and not martial arts at all. Not what I expected it. Would not recommend this to martial arts aficionados.

fire

Interesting Flick
A plot that seems to shift from here to there with a mix of drama and supernatural martial arts that is pretty entertaining.

Leap Frog: Adventures In Shapeville Park

My daughter loves it!
I highly recommend this, especially since you get two leapfrog videos in one, Shapeville and Numberland, and it continues so your kid can continue to enjoy if a leapfrog fan!!!!!! Personally Numberland makes it worth it a lone. But My daughter loves shapeville! I would recommend starting out with Amazing Alphabet though!

Not as good as the others, but still cute
I expected this video to be as good as "Phonics Farm" and "Numberland". It does not hold the attention of my 10 month old and 2.5 yr old as those two do. You can never go wrong with "Preschool Prep's Meet the Shapes, Letter, Numbers & Colors" over all Preschool Prep is my first choice. Leapfrog used to be, but now it falls in to a number 3 slot in educational (baby signing time would be our number 2)

The Obscure Object of Desire [HD]

Solid 5 stars
Solid 5 starts, for those who like Spanish director Luis Buñuel, whose filmography is a genre of its own. .

Complicated cerebral film. Excellent! Dramatic!
This cerebral film "The Obscure Object of Desire" pulled me in from the very first scene. A sophisticated gentleman is on a train and a young woman approaches. She is tall and demure but agitated. She's looking for someone; it's the sophisticated gentleman she seeks because when he sees her his reaction is one of surprise and horror. She finds him and pleads with him. He talks to a train conductor and when she appears at his car he throws a bucket of water over her. His riding companions are stunned because the act seems so contrary to his character. He proceeds to tell his traveling companions about his relationship with the woman; and this is the beginning of the story.

In this film, the unexpected happens. You never can predict what will happen next. The filmmaker is psychologically astute. The drama develops out of the intense relationships.

I won't spoil it for you by describing anything else. It is an excellent film full of eroticism, friendship and love...

waste of time watching
This movie was a waste of my time and money to watch. Not worth renting or viewing for that matter. Don't bother!

The Liability

A drive on the wild side
Dark, funny British hitman thriller, takes you places you didn't expect to go, both plotwise and geographically (it's set in the Northeast of England). Tim Roth, Peter Mullan, Jack O'Connell (soon to be seen in 300 prequel) are all on cracking form. And Talulah Riley. Wow! What a revelation. She sure was wasted in St Trinian's!

A Genine British Eccentric
Used to be you could discover a movie for yourself. Roll home late, switch on the TV, next thing you know you're glued to the sofa long past bedtime. Or maybe you were hypnotized by the second movie in the double bill at a long-dead indie rep. Left the theatre banging on about it to all your friends. Not any more. Thanks Internet.

So when a movie comes along that looks like one thing, turns out to be something else, and draws you in so completely you feel you're in the middle of an actual discovery all of your own, enjoy it. All that earnest amateur analysis you skimmed online beforehand, the radioactive comparisons with other flicks, the petulant certainties about genre shortcomings, pay none of it any heed. Instead, hand yourself over to the people with the actual talent. Go where the writer and the film makers take you.

The Liability is a movie worth discovering for yourself. The poster of a geezer with a shooter gives a broad hint of what to expect and there...

Don't read the description of this movie...JUST SEE IT!
JUST SEE IT! But don't read the movies description because it gives the "surprise" away! After I saw this exciting film, I read the description and was so glad I didn't read it first before seeing the film! It would be like buying a "who done it book, which tells the reader who did it on the book jacket!"

Yet another excellent performance by Tim Roth. He even makes the other unknown actors look terrific with his understated, intense expressions that say so much more than any dialogue can. Bravo!

Could be the worst movie I've ever seen. Seriously.
When I first heard about this movie, I was very excited. The trailer looked scary as hell, and the premise was new and original for the slasher subgenre within horror. The mask was awesome (and still is), plus, Keith David (John Carpenter's The Thing, They Live, There's Something About Mary) was in it, how could it be bad? I was telling people about it, genuinely excited for its release. I even shelled out money to the website that the movie would premiere on, promising behind the scenes looks into the 'Making Of'. I joined their video submission contest to see if it would get into the movie. Independent movies like this, especially horror, are what really give fans things that are new and original, so I am happy to support them.

And then I saw it.

Now, this follows the fact that a week before the movie was set to premiere on VOD, the whole idea was shaken up, and AMC Theaters bought the rights to show the movie in various cities around the country, mine...

I wanted to love this
I wish I could give this movie five stars. I really do. I love the idea of a manifestation of human evil, coming alive through one of our greatest tools. I love the examination of "trolling" behavior and how it looks when people take that attitude into the real world. I love the idea of the extremes we can go through when we have the advantage of anonymity. And I love the idea of humanity being just a step in the evolution of something truly terrifying.

That being said though, the movie itself is a mess. Most of the actors are good, but the script is a jumbled mess. The dialogue is so overly-dramatic and jarring. It sounds to me like the writers spent a lot of time researching the inner-working of internet communities and personalities in a textbook, but never actually bothered to go online.

I enjoyed the reveal towards the end and thought it made for a very good ending, but the actual last couple of minutes were a little disappointing and predictable...

I saw this for free on Amazon Prime and I thank Amazon for saving me $10. The movie is basically about a killer that appears after you write something three times on your computer on a chat site kind of like an update of Bloody Mary or Candyman. It does hold my interest but the cast sucks & it dragged on for way too long. The big reveal made me confused & the ending screamed sequel. If you have Amazon Prime then check this out for free but do not pay for this movie. It's not worth the money.
