Ultramarines: Warhammer [HD]

Not For 40K Fans
This review is bound to inflame other Warhammer 40,000 fans but I feel like I would betraying the franchise not to express my opinion. The Ultramarines movie was a big step for the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and it generated a lot of excitement. When I found out about the movie I was ecstatic. At one point in time I even had the special edition box set pre-ordered from the official website. Fortunately for me funds ran low and I wasn't able to make the purchase. A month later I watched the movie with a friend who had gotten the movie and I couldn't have been more disappointed.

A lot of the excitement around the Ultramarines Movie project came from the announcement that mega author Dan Abnett would be writing the screenplay. First let me say that I have nothing but respect for Dan Abnett. I cannot name a single Warhammer 40,000 book he has written that I have not enjoyed completely. And I've read them all. Dan Abnett is by far the best author in the ranks of the Black...

A Good First Step for 40K Cinema
Ultramarines deals with - yes - a squad of Ultramarines who are sent to investigate a distress beacon on the planet of Mithron, home to an important imperial shrine. Without giving too much away, this hardy bunch of the Emperor's finest soon discover that the sinister forces of Chaos are at work. From there, the movie proceeds according to standard Space Marine codex operating procedures, i.e., burn the heretic! Ha! This straightforward plot is largely executed by the numbers, something that, unfortunately, leaves little room for surprises or plot twists. As a result, the plot is ultimately little more than a pretext for the Space Marines to do their stuff.

However, having said that, Ultramarines deserves high praise for faithfully - an important term when it comes to 40K - delivering a movie that truly does capture the essence of 40K. This is no small feat seeing how so many other studios could have - nay, would have - over-simplified and butchered the complex lore...

Releasing a bad movie on Blu-ray does not make it better.
I have been playing / collecting WH40k for 23 years and I have read all the books....I really find it hard to believe Dan Abenet wrote the script I think he just wrote the name of the movie on a piece of paper and some one else wrote it. Dan is a GREAT Author and his name on it is what sold the movie. The animation was really bad and jerky the Dawn of War trailers were 1000% better than this movie. I went to the New York City showing of this movie on the big screen and it was even more horrible to watch. During the Q&A after the movie the producer admitted to not knowing anything about 40K saying "well I may have painted 1 or 2 figurines for my brother when I was younger but I never played the game and I have not read any of the novels." OOOOO KAY buddy no wonder this movie is horrible because the guy had no love nor passion for the game and its history he was just out to make a quick buck.

Natural Selection

Solid film with a lot of heart
Heard that this film had won a lot of film festivals - but I didn't know anything about it, and I had only vaguely heard of the actors. Pleasantly surprised. I laughed. I cried. Would definitely recommend, which I'm doing right now!

It May Have Just Been Me
Well acted. Beautifully filmed. But this movie just did't work for me. It's a dark comedy, for sure, and maybe it was just my mood that day.

Left-of-center movie delivers
I was recently browsing for a good movie in the film section of my local library and stumbled upon this. I looked at the DVD jacket and noticed this won some awards at various movie festivals, and that was good enough for me.

"Natural Selection" (2011 release; 90 min.) brings the story of Linda (played by Rachael Harris), who lives within a closed Christian comunity in suburban Houston. Linda finds out that her husband Abe has a 23 yr. old son, now living in Florida, the result of Abe's frequent visits (unbeknownst to Linda) to the local sperm donor bank. Abe suffers a stroke and may be in his last days, and as a last wish, he asks Linda to look up his son and bring him back for one final visit. Linda obliges and finds Raymond (played by Matt O'Leary). Raymong couldn't be more different from Linda ans his only motivation to join Linda for the drive back is that he seems to be in trouble with the law. What we get next is a road movie that chronicles the ups and downs of...

Inspired: The Voices Against Prop 8

Heartbreaking and Informative
I got a chance to see this documentary at a film fest, and it was eye opening. As a straight guy living in the midwest, I had no idea about the scale of the issues captured in this documentary.

This is the story about equality told through the eyes of the people that Prop 8 affected. Through series of interviews and footage of protests across California, the filmakers captured the frustration, hurt and anger that Prop 8 levied on the gay community. It also captured the feeling of hope as well. Hope that through protests, information and outreach that they can work to overturn the effects of the law. It worked too, and the movement is spreading.

As a supporter of equality rights, this spoke to me. Its films like this that are helping the movement of gay rights in the U.S. As one of the producers was quoted as saying 'You've never heard of a civil rights movement that failed. It just takes time."

Great movie
I saw this movie at a few film festivals and it was really great. Having lived through the Prop 8 campaign in Long Beach and Los Angeles, I thought the film did a great job of capturing the emotion and anger after Prop 8 passed. I was impressed with the film's ability to capture diverse voices and opinions.

The documentary is raw, engaging, and at times funny. It's easy to watch, and a must see for anyone interested in the gay rights movement.

Inspired is inspiring!
Inspired: The Voices Against Prop 8 is a must see. It is an amazing tool in political/marriage amendment work, but, more importantly, it is also a powerful reminder that the GLBTQ community is NOT just gay, white and male.
It really helped me to start thinking 'outside the box!'

START: A Beginner's Guide to Oil Painting

Only if I have to watch it again
The first thing is the quality of the video is poor. I did pick up a couple of tips, but all in all I do not think it gets a new painter off on the right foot. I would not recommend it if you know anything about painting. If you are new to painting then you need to know to place your colors like the color wheel and always put the colors in the same position. I just do not have a great deal of good to say about it. I think the lady that comes in to paint is not necessary. He really does not help her much. At the end I was amazed that the painting turned out as good as it did.

A good honest presentation of beginning painting.
I gave this video a 4 star because it is what it's title says...a beginners guide.
The instructor had a difficult job to paint as he helps the student. It presented
a true picture of the first struggles we all have had. He was helping at same time not making student uncomfortable.
I would recommend this video, with emphasis it's aimed at beginners.

Love Surreal

Very corny, very sweet, very cute, very formulaic (with one twist), very, very Disney, now in widescreen
This little charmer is a by-the-numbers romantic comedy, complete with wacky sidekicks. A budding artist girl meets an art-challenged boy in a college art appreciation class. The girl already has another boy, seemingly perfect, but he isn't what he seems (the twist). The leads are attractively played, the supporting cast characterful, if occasionally a bit over-the-top. Better production values than expected for a made-for-TV movie, set mainly in college, a Border's Bookstore, various art venues, and a few living spaces, with nothing stronger than a swear word, a little beer, and a kiss. If you like the genre, and Disney, it's nicely done.

This also goes by the title Everything You Want. The earlier release under that title was pan-and-scan, whereas this one is widescreen.

nice
Very nice safe movie. A decision between two loves. What will decide? Watch to see what she decides to do?

Cute wholesome movie
This movie was a cute little comedy that was clean and funny.I thought the acting was pretty good and that the chemistry between the characters was nice.
It was a fairly typical romance with a little twist. Not a amazingly unique movie, but very good none-the-less.

Sinister

Scared the crap out of me
Horror movies these days don't really scare people. The only horror movie to really creep someone out more recently is the
first Paranormal Activity. But that's now been done to death. All horror movies now a days are either remakes or go for shock and become what is the newer term, "torture porn", until now. Sinister came along just in time for all of us to get our
Halloween chills and scared the crap out of America. I have seen a lot of horror. I even go for those really bad SyFy B-rated
ones for laughs. The newer horror doesn't scare because it's predictable and instead it disgusts me. The over use of torture and gore that have nothing to do with the plot. Sinister however does something different. Ethan Hawke plays the character of a true crime writer desperate to live his glory days, almost at the cost of his family. And he plays it well. The violence that actually has to do with the plot was creatively filmed. And because the story was unique and not a rehash,...

'Sinister' delivers the chills
Director Scott Derrickson's latest entry into the horror genre, the aptly titled `Sinister', is an instant classic.

Egomaniacal true-crime novelist, Ellison Oswalt, moves his wife and two kids into the house where an unsettling murder involving a family of five has recently taken place. He plans to write about the incident and the missing child, who was apparently spared and kidnapped by the killer, hoping that he can solve the mystery without the help of the local authorities.

As he stores boxes in the attic, he finds several reels of Super 8 film and a projector. Each film contains increasingly graphic and macabre footage of a family being murdered. Upon further inspection, Ellison discovers that a pale, hollow-eyed figure can be seen lurking in the background in each one of the home movies. A pattern begins to emerge, as Ellison becomes consumed with the dark secrets that lie within the films. Further investigation confirms that there are demonic forces at...

Best Horror To Come To The Theater In Years!!!
This movie I have to say, is one of the best horror film's I have seen in theaters since "Orphan" (2009). I don't get scared easily and the movie brought chills down my spine!!! The dialogue in the film was good, the acting was much better than expected (I am a huge fan of Ethan Hawk from Day Breakers, the cinematography was perfect, the story definitely carried out smoothly, and the idea behind the movie and having a descent original supernatural climax was really what kept this movie on the edge of your seat! A lot of horror films in the past that are about supernatural things but end up having a human climax is disappointing to me in most movies (cry wolf, sorority row, etc). The ending really caught me off guard, and ended in a way that makes u feel cold and creeped out. This movie makes you think. I don't know how anyone wouldn't find this film creepy, or sick to say the least and if you don't think so then something is seriously wrong with you. Amazing film! Wish there was an...
